| Playstyle | Look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Solo player | Self-sustain and escape tools over raw damage | You have no one to hold the campfire for you. Any class that shortens a bad night is worth more than one that shortens a fight. |
| Co-op team | One economy class, one combat class, one scout | Rescues are escort missions. Splitting gathering, defence and scouting removes the bottleneck that kills most team runs. |
| Melee | Damage mitigation and a slow or stun effect | Hunters like The Ram apply knockback. Without mitigation you lose positioning, and without positioning melee collapses. |
| Ranged | Ammo economy and a slow effect | Ranged is how you beat things you cannot outrun. A slow such as the Ice Bow freeze converts a lost race into a survivable fight. |
| Farming and economy | Gathering yield and processing synergy | Campfire level gates the missing children, and bench 4–5 gates the endgame. Economy classes shorten both gates. |
| Long survival (day 70+) | Sustain, base repair and defensive scaling | After night 50 the pressure shifts from players to structures. Late classes should answer that, not add damage. |
Best Classes in 99 Nights in the Forest
There is no single best class — there is only the class that fits the run you are playing. This page maps each playstyle to the traits that actually matter, then lists what we currently know about each class.
Short answer
- Night hunters outrun you and are flagged immortal, so disengage tools beat raw damage.
- Campfire level gates every missing-child rescue, so economy classes shorten the whole run.
- After night 50 the pressure moves onto your structures, so late classes need defensive value.

The speed problem
Why class choice matters in this game
Most class tier lists borrow their logic from games where you can kill the threat. 99 Nights in the Forest is not that game. Every night hunter in our data is flagged immortal, and they are faster than you: The Deer is roughly 1.5x your sprint speed, while The Owl and The Ram are close to 2x.
That single fact reshapes the whole ranking. A class that helps you disengage, hold a lit position or shorten the time you spend outside camp is worth more than a damage bonus you can never safely use.
The second gate: the campfire
Every missing child is tied to a campfire level, and Koala Kid needs Level 6. Anything that accelerates wood, scrap and fuel income effectively accelerates the entire rescue chain. That is why economy traits rank higher here than in most survival games.
Rule of thumb
If a class helps you survive a bad night or shorten a gate, it is good. If it only helps you win a fight you did not need to take, it is a luxury.Roster
Classes we can confirm
The 2026-09-05 New Classes content is the most recent update lead we track, and it names three classes. We list exactly what is confirmed and exactly what is not.
Escape Artist
Confirmed: Added in the New Classes content alongside class quests, daily quests, Fire Offerings and three class badges.
Probable role: Name points to a mobility and disengage theme, which matters because night hunters outrun the player.
Still to verify
- · Starting items and perk list.
- · Unlock cost or unlock condition.
- · Whether the mobility theme applies to sprint, escapes or both.
Elemental
Confirmed: Added in the New Classes content. No further verified detail.
Probable role: Likely an elemental damage or resistance theme.
Still to verify
- · Element type coverage.
- · Whether the bonus applies to weapons, traps or both.
- · Unlock condition.
Woodsman
Confirmed: Added in the New Classes content. No further verified detail.
Probable role: Likely a gathering and wood economy theme — relevant because campfire levels gate every missing-child rescue.
Still to verify
- · Wood yield bonus or gathering speed.
- · Whether it affects the Sawmill and Plank line.
- · Unlock condition.
Methodology
How we judge classes
- Solo survivability — can this class survive a night alone when the campfire is the only light?
- Group value — does it do something nobody else on the team is doing?
- Economy contribution — does it shorten the campfire and crafting bench gates?
- Late-run scaling — does it still matter after night 50, when the pressure shifts onto structures?
Tier placement is opinion, mechanics are not
