99 Nights in the Forest Crafting Guide

Crafting is a gate system, not a menu. Five bench tiers, two gem walls, and a 2026 production layer that changed what late-game building actually costs.

Short answer

Progression runs through five Crafting Bench tiers. Tiers 1–3 are gated by Wood and Metal. Tier 4 requires 2 Cultist Gems and Tier 5 requires 1 Gem of the Forest, and both gems come from exploration or raid content rather than from a bench. Add a Sawmill before Tier 4, because higher tiers consume Planks instead of raw logs.

  • Bench 1–3: Wood and Metal gates — solvable by farming.
  • Bench 4: 2 Cultist Gems — Ice Temple, fishing, Cultist kills, Cultist Stronghold.
  • Bench 5: 1 Gem of the Forest — deep temple chests or 100+ day raids.
  • Build the Sawmill early or your wood income stops mattering at the exact tier costs explode.

The gate model

How crafting works

Crafting in 99 Nights in the Forest is best understood as five gates in a row. The first three are resource gates: farm more wood and metal and you pass. The last two are content gates: they need items that only come from temples, strongholds or long raids.

That distinction is why so many runs stall at the same place. Players arrive at Bench 3 with thousands of wood, discover Bench 4 needs gems, and realise their entire economy was pointed at the wrong resource.

Plan for Bench 4 while you are still on Bench 2

Cultist Gem sources include the Ice Temple, fishing, Cultist kills and the Cultist Stronghold. Two of those — the Ice Temple and the Stronghold — can be run in the same loop, so the cost of preparing early is much lower than it looks.

2026 additions

Production buildings and processes

The old crafting tables miss the entire 2026 production layer. These are the additions that change how you plan a base.

The Obsidiron chain is not a recipe

Players lose hours looking for the Obsidiron Ingot on a crafting bench. It is an environmental process: gather the Obsidiron Crystal, break it into shards, melt the shards in lava, then cool the result with water. If you treat it as a bench recipe you will never find it.

What to do next

  • Reach Bench 2 quickly — it is where a campfire becomes a base.
  • Start collecting Cultist Gems long before you need Bench 4.

Frequently asked questions

How do I unlock higher crafting benches in 99 Nights in the Forest?
Each bench tier is crafted at the previous tier. Bench 2 needs 1 Metal and 5 Wood, Bench 3 needs 10 Metal and 15 Wood, Bench 4 needs 20 Metal, 30 Wood and 2 Cultist Gems, and Bench 5 needs 50 Metal, 50 Wood and 1 Gem of the Forest. Treat these numbers as a verification checklist — our base recipe table comes from a 2025-11 source and is being re-tested.
What is the Sawmill for?
It converts raw logs into Planks. From the higher bench tiers onward, advanced structures and defences consume Planks instead of raw wood, so a large wood pile alone stops being useful.
What is the biggest crafting bottleneck?
The two gems. Cultist Gems gate bench 4 and the Gem of the Forest gates bench 5. Both require content — temples, strongholds or raids — rather than simple farming.
