99 Nights in the Forest Armour Guide

Armour matters because hunter damage scales. Base hunter damage is around 25 against your 100 HP, which means four hits kills you with nothing equipped — so the right helmet changes which nights are survivable at all.

Short answer

Craft the Boar Helmet first — Boar Tusk plus Leather, and the first head slot that meaningfully changes hunter survivability. The endgame target is the Infernal Helmet, which needs a Scorpion Shell and a Cultist King Antler, so it is tied to a boss route rather than to farming.

  • Boar Helmet — Boar Tusk + Leather, best early-to-mid head protection.
  • Infernal Helmet — Scorpion Shell + Cultist King Antler, endgame.
  • Warm clothing lines use Polar Bear and Arctic Fox pelts for snow routes.
  • Base hunter damage ~25 vs your 100 HP — armour decides whether you survive four hits or two.

The damage maths

Why armour matters

Your HP

100

Player maximum health.

Hunter base damage

~25

Four unarmoured hits kills you.

Scaling

Yes

Rises with day count, hunger and a dead campfire.

Armour is not about becoming unkillable. It is about buying one or two extra hits, which is the difference between escaping a bad encounter and dying in it. That is why the first helmet matters more than the first weapon upgrade.

The scaling problem

Hunter damage is reported to scale with day count and hunger and to spike when the campfire is out. Armour helps most in exactly the situations where those multipliers are already working against you.

Warm clothing is gear, not cosmetics

The Polar Bear Pelt and Arctic Fox Pelt both come from the Snow Biome and feed the warm clothing lines. If you are planning Ice Temple runs for Cultist Gems, treat warm clothing as part of that route rather than a side-quest.

Order of operations

Upgrade path

  1. Leather and pelts first. Wolf and Bear pelts are the earliest reliable materials.
  2. Boar Helmet — Boar Tusk plus Leather. Your first real survivability jump.
  3. Warm clothing — needed before sustained snow routes.
  4. Infernal Helmet — Scorpion Shell plus Cultist King Antler. Boss-gated, so plan it as a long-run objective.

Pair the routes

The Scorpion Shell comes from the Volcanic Biome and the Cultist King Antler from the Cultist King Palace in the same biome. Both can be planned as one endgame push rather than two separate trips.

Honest limits

What armour does not do

  • It does not let you outrun anything — Player baseline: 16 walkspeed walking, roughly 24 sprinting, 100 max HP. Every enemy number on this site is interpreted against these three values, because a raw "walkspeed 45" means nothing until you know you cannot outrun it.
  • It does not stop the building damage The Ram is reported to deal after night 50.
  • It does not compensate for a campfire that has gone out.

Defence is layered

Light, traps, walls and then armour — in that order. Armour is the last layer, not the first.

What to do next

  • Farm a Boar Tusk for the first meaningful helmet upgrade.
  • Plan the Scorpion Shell and Cultist King Antler route well before the Infernal Helmet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best armour in 99 Nights in the Forest?
The Infernal Helmet is the endgame target, requiring a Scorpion Shell and a Cultist King Antler. Before that, the Boar Helmet is the most practical upgrade because its materials are farmable rather than boss-gated.
How much damage do hunters actually do?
Base damage is reported around 25 against a player maximum of 100 HP, which means four unarmoured hits kill you. Damage also scales with day count and hunger, and spikes when the campfire is out, so late runs can kill you in two hits.
Do I need warm clothing?
Yes for snow routes. The Polar Bear Pelt feeds the Polar Bear Hat and the Arctic Fox Pelt feeds Warm Clothing, and both come from the Snow Biome — which is also where the Ice Temple sits.
Is armour better than traps?
No. Armour raises how many hits you survive; traps reduce how many hits land. Build traps first, then armour.
