How to Tame Animals in 99 Nights in the Forest

Taming matters because of one number: your sprint speed. Every hunter in the game is faster than you and flagged immortal, so a mount is the only consistent way to turn a lost foot race into a survivable escape.

Short answer

Taming is part of the game’s entity system, and community tactics assume mounted travel — but we have not confirmed a per-animal taming method in game yet. What we can tell you is why it matters: you sprint at about 24 walkspeed, while The Deer moves at 35+, and The Owl and The Ram at 45. On foot you lose that race every time.

  • A mount is an escape tool, not a weapon.
  • Hunters are flagged immortal, so mobility beats damage.
  • Taming is a mid-game investment — stabilise camp first.
  • Per-animal recipes stay unpublished until we complete them in game.

Three principles

Why taming matters

A mount is an escape tool, not a weapon

Every hunter in our data outruns you on foot. A mount is the only consistent way to convert a lost foot race into a survivable disengage.

Speed solves the problem damage does not

The Deer, Owl and Ram are all flagged immortal in our data. Killing them is not on the table, so mobility is the answer, not DPS.

Taming is a mid-game investment

Do not chase it on day one. You need a stable campfire and a food loop before the time cost pays off.

The honest caveat

We would rather tell you that a method is unverified than copy a recipe from another site and hope it still works. Everything below is preparation logic that stays true regardless of which animal ends up being tameable in your build.

Why foot escape fails

The speed maths

SubjectSpeedVerdict
Player walking16 walkspeedBaseline
Player sprinting~24 walkspeedYour real escape speed
The Deer35+ walkspeedAbout 1.5x your sprint — you lose
The Owl45 walkspeedNearly 2x your sprint — you lose badly
The Ram45 walkspeedNearly 2x your sprint, plus knockback

Read the last column again

Against The Owl and The Ram you are roughly half as fast as the thing chasing you. No amount of good movement fixes that. Only a mount, a trap or a lit campfire changes the outcome.

Checklist

How to prepare

  1. 1Stabilise the camp first — campfire level, beds and a food source.
  2. 2Confirm which entities are flagged tameable in the current build before investing time.
  3. 3Prepare the tame item or food the entity requires. Keeping it ready avoids a wasted trip.
  4. 4Approach on foot with an escape route behind you. Do not start a tame next to a hunter lane.
  5. 5Once mounted, re-plan your night route: you can now cross ground that was previously lethal.

Route changes once you have a mount

The biggest change is not speed, it is permission. Ground that was previously lethal becomes traversable, which lets you combine objectives into single trips — the Ice Temple and the Cultist Stronghold, for example, which share the same travel cost.

Open questions

What we are still verifying

  • Which entities are tameable in the current build.
  • The exact item or food each animal requires.
  • How long a tame takes and whether it can be interrupted.
  • Whether tamed animals can be lost to hunters.
  • Whether mounted speed differs between animals.

We will publish this the moment we confirm it

The last-checked date at the top of this page tells you whether the current information is fresh. When we finish an in-game taming pass, this page gets the real per-animal method — not before.

What to do next

  • Stabilise your camp before investing time in taming.
  • Recheck this page after our next in-game taming pass.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tame animals in 99 Nights in the Forest?
Taming is part of the game’s entity system — our tracked entity database carries a tameable flag — and community tactics assume mounted travel. We have not yet confirmed the exact taming method per animal in game, so this page explains why taming matters and how to prepare, and flags the step-by-step method as NEEDS_VERIFY.
Why should I bother taming when I can just fight?
Because the night hunters are flagged immortal in our data and outrun you: The Deer is about 1.5x your sprint speed, while The Owl and The Ram are close to 2x. Fighting them does nothing and running fails, so mobility is the only reliable answer.
When should I start working on taming?
After your camp is stable, not before. Taming costs time you do not have on day one, when wood and campfire levels still gate every rescue.
Do you publish a per-animal taming recipe?
Not yet. We will only publish a recipe after we complete it in game, rather than copying one from another site and hoping it is current.

Sources and verification status

The tameable flag comes from a structured entity database and community tactics assume mounted travel. The exact per-animal method is not confirmed, so we publish the preparation logic and flag the recipe as NEEDS_VERIFY rather than copying one from elsewhere.
