Job one
Progression gate
Every missing child requires a specific campfire level.
Job two
Survival tool
Hunter damage is reported to spike when the fire is out.
Most players treat the campfire as a light source and then wonder why they cannot progress. In 99 Nights in the Forest it is both the light source and the key. If you are blocked anywhere in a run, the answer is usually a campfire level.
The compounding effect
Each rescued child then takes a camp job that feeds the camp — firewood, fishing, defence or gathering. So campfire levels unlock children, and children accelerate campfire levels. Front-loading the fire is the highest-return investment in the game.
